The Sound of a Closed Ecologic System

The work is an installation consisting of three Closed Ecologic Circuits with electrodes connected to a small tree in each circuit. The electrodes measures changes in voltage in the trees, and a computer maps the data to a formant synthesizer. The intention is to translate the language of the forest to sound.

An interface for communicating back to the plants will use a soft, touch sensitive sculpture that trans- lates the audiences interaction to signals similar to the signals the plants are producing. The electrodes recieving the signals are placed such that there will be an immediate sound produced, and a slower change in sound from the response of the plants to the signal.

The interface for communicating back to the plants will thus become both an interface for communicating with the plants, and an interface for playing on the plants.
