Agency is the capacity of an agent to make choices and manipulate the external world accordingly. Harry G. Frankfurt has some interesting insights on whether this capacity may or might be free for different agents while presupposing the possibility of freedom of the will.

The freedom of the will is quite interesting when one states that the world is casually closed and that everything is physical (materialism). For if causality in its basic form is correct, then there should not be room for free will, and we have a deterministic and materialistic universe.

But as should be clear to all, it is in the fringes of natures order, where logic and the omnipresent patterns no longer can give an account for how the complexity and fuzzy logic of order and chaos may or might evolve into wonders like an emerging consciousness with freedom of its will.
